Lawless is a film based on the novel "The Wettest County in the World", written by Matt Bondurant.  It is based on three brothers, Howard, Forrest, and Jack Bondurant. It takes place in Franklin County Virginia in 1931, the height of prohibition as well as a time of prosperity for moonshine bootleggers. This films greatest asset it providing the common theme in the 1930's which was depicting outlaws as heroes. In Franklin County, Va. Moonshine was inescapable in that region during Prohibition: a 1935 government study estimated that it affected 99 percent of the county’s inhabitants.
